Our First Earthquake Experience

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

I can literally sit here and tell you that once upon a time when we first moved here I said that I was bummed that we had been here a year already and hadn't felt an earthquake.

Fast forward to early Sunday morning.. I immediately regret ever saying that. Ever.

I was up taking care of Mr. B. I got up around 3am and was rocking him back to sleep. He was almost back asleep when all of a sudden i felt a little rumble become a bigger rumble. I panicked and yelled for CL. Since it was about 3:20am it was dead silent and I could hear our apartment shaking. I literally froze with fear. (Note to self, next time, get up and stand under the door frame.

just to show you how far away the epicenter was and we still felt it. scary, huh? (we are in san jose, at the bottom about an hour and 15 mins from where the quake was the worst.)

It was terrifying. The earth moving beneath you with no warning, and no time limit. It felt like really bad turbulence on an airplane except I was sitting in a chair in my son's room. Even the dogs freaked out. Molly was a shaky mess! CL thought it was the dogs crawling under our bed at first, then realized what was happening and hopped up out of bed.

Being from Texas we are used to Hurricanes or Tornadoes.. things you know are headed your way. (well sorta with Tornadoes) Earthquakes just happen without warning. Hows that for a nightmare?!

Anyways, come to find out, it was a 6.0 magnatude earthquake in American Canyon in Napa Valley. The biggest earthquake in the Bay Area since 1989! The damage in Napa is terrible. Luckily no one was badly hurt, or killed, but the damage to the area is pretty devastating. People in the valley were without power, there were gas main breaks, lots of broken glass and lots of broken wine bottles (sad, sad, sad!)

They say this could be a precursor to a much bigger (ugh) earthquake, and that there will be tremors for a week. Im hoping its over with, but then again, we live here knowing that this can, and will happen from time to time. Yikes!
